ARTIST IN RESIDENCE WORKSHOPS IN 2005 WITH JANE GIBSON
There were four workshops held with each of three groups.
The adult quilting group had a one day workshop on fabric dyeing, a one day
workshop on fabric printing and a one day workshop on “fantasy fabrics” created
with fabric and thread scraps held in place with tulle and machine stitching.
During these workshops, participants were working on the design of their quilts,
designing blocks based on a 9 x 5 grid as a salute to Tom Roberts and drawing
inspiration from their own lives. The final session covered free machine
quilting as well as solving individual design problems. There was no requirement
that the participants use all the techniques covered in one quilt, rather that
the techniques were added to their repertoire and used as a starting point for
the workshop quilts.
The Textile and Design students from the High Schools in Inverell also learnt
dyeing, printing and “fantasy fabrics” but the emphasis was on helping them with
techniques to be applied to their major works for HSC. They produced some
wonderful pieces of jewellery.
The Years 5 & 6 students came from Ross Hill, Inverell, Tingha, and Delungra
Primary Schools and Holy Trinity. They also had one session dyeing fabric and
one printing fabric and produced some outstanding pieces of fabric. These
fabrics were then incorporated into small quilts with photos of the children and
strips of commercial fabrics chosen because the subjects were of interest to the
children.
Work from all three groups has been on display at St Vincent’s Hospital in
Sydney and will be on display during the Tom Roberts festival.
