WELCOME TO COUNTRY & FESTIVAL OPENING  Elders of the local indigenous community, Pauline Bartholomew and Elizabeth Connors, and the Mayor of Inverell Mr. Barry Johnson will lead a welcome ceremony. Mr Richard Roberts, Tom Roberts' great grandson, will speak briefly and then the Hon. Mr. John Anderson MP will officially open the Festival.

TOM ROBERTS EXHIBITION OPENING  A Gala evening to launch the exhibition of over a dozen Tom Roberts original works taken from public and private collections especially for the 2006 Festival. Tom Roberts 'Self Portrait' will again be on display.
  • “9 x 5” Exhibition Launch & Auction
    The Exhibition Opening will include the launch of the 9”x 5” Exhibition. Celebrities and artists have been invited to submit art works on a small canvas, inspired by the theme of “Tom Roberts Retraced”. This exhibition is a re-creation of the 9”x 5” exhibition by Tom Roberts & the Heidelberg School of artists in 1889 with ‘Portraiture’ and ‘Plein Air’. The celebrity works will be auctioned during the evening.
  • National Quilt Challenge Winners Announced
    The Exhibition Opening will include the announcement of the winners of the National Quilt Challenge, "Family Portraits", judged by Lisa Roberts and Jane Gibson. The entries will be on display in the Austral Band Hall, Campbell Street.

TOM ROBERTS HERITAGE TOUR    Guided coach tour to art sites associated with the twelve local Tom Roberts paintings. The tour includes Newstead Shearing Shed where “The Golden Fleece” & “Newstead Shearing Shed” were painted; Newstead Chapel & Cemetery; Newstead North Homestead, home of Tom Roberts’ friend, Duncan Anderson; Paradise Road: scene for “Bailed Up”; Paradise shearing shed; Macintyre River, where Roberts painted “In a Corner on the Macintyre”. The NSW Ministry of the Arts and the Inverell Shire Council have made funding available for conservation works on the Newstead Homestead.

Students will produce a series of small works.

THE TOM ROBERTS GALA CONCERT   Tom Roberts was very interested in all forms of art, including music. His friend Duncan Anderson of Newstead was an accomplished cornet player, performing throughout Europe as well as appearing in concerts in Inverell. The music for this concert will reflect their musical tastes, with actor Rick Hutton reading entertaining excerpts from Roberts’ and Anderson’s letters. The concert will feature the cornet/trumpet playing of Andrew Evans, Head of Brass at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music; with colleague David Miller AM, Director of Ensemble Studies, and celebrated soprano Peta Blyth. Two local choirs will perform from the work '‘Living Images of Long Ago” by Paul Paviour, commissioned for the 1996 Tom Roberts Festival and based on his local paintings.

  NHUNTA KARRA KARA TRACK  The walk along the Nhunta Karra Kara track in the Goonoowigall Reserve was opened in June 2005, a project of the Inverell Reconciliation Group. The plaques along the track record the places where Aboriginal families lived from the 1940’s until the mid 1960's when they were allowed to move into town. This walk, with an Aboriginal family member as a guide, takes you through the “living history” of this area.

  MYALL CREEK MEMORIAL GUIDED WALK   In June 1838, more than thirty Aboriginal people, mostly women and children were cruelly murdered by eleven convict station hands, led by a district squatter’s son. The colony was in uproar at the court’s decision to hang seven of the convicts for this horrendous crime. The local Reconciliation group host this walk through the memorial track.

PAINTING WITH A PALETTE KNIFE  - JENIE CLOUGH   This workshop looks at the palette knife as yet another means of giving different textures to either oil or acrylic paint.   ROBERTS ON ROBERTS LECTURE & DINNER   Lisa Roberts will talk about "family memories" of Tom Roberts and give us an insight into her journey to become an artist recognised in her own right. Working in media completely different to her famous ancestor, interactive media, film, and print. Her work includes installations Roget's Circular and 42 Days held in Melbourne (2001) and Sydney, the latter describing the trip she did as part of her Humanities berth on the Aurora Australis V7 with the Australian Antarctic Division.

  STREET PARTY - CELEBRATING TOM'S 150th BIRTHDAY  Celebrate Inverell in this showcase of our district's music, food and entertainment. Renowned chef Anna Phillips will demonstrate her very special skills in cooking seafood, while the birthday cake is cut and distributed to the partygoers. Set amongst the autumn trees on Evans St, the marquee will provide a charming venue to relax, eat and drink while enjoying local musical talent.

  THE TOM ROBERTS BIRTHDAY BASH  The following groups have been invited to participate in a lively community concert featuring local musicians, singers and dancers: The Clarion Singers, The McKernan Brothers and Tim O'Connell with special guest Chuck Stanaway, The Inverell Male Choir, vocals with Leonie Gardner, Peter Schuhmacher and Wendy Champion duet (flute and clarinet), The Sapphire Concert Band, and Craze Dance Academy.

  TOM ROBERTS TENTERFIELD CONNECTION  Chris Humphreys will talk about the Tom Roberts connection with the people and places in the Tenterfield area. These should obviously be of interest to the descendants of the early families who occupied the region bounded by Copmanhurst, Wiangaree, Urbenville, Stanthorpe, Bonshaw, Inverell and Glen Innes.

This week includes many school based activities related to many Festival events that were held in the school holidays.

  BUSHRANGERS AND BARRISTERS - HISTORIC HOUSES TRUST
Students follow the deadly escapades of one of Australia’s notorious outlaws and then participate in his trial for murder. They learn about life and law in the age of the bushrangers, watch a video on Captain Thunderbolt, view artworks, and do a craft activity. (stages 2 & 3 HSIE)

  THE PYJAMA GIRL - HISTORIC HOUSES TRUST
Using forensic images and newsreel, students piece together one of Australia’s most puzzling murder mysteries! Students re-enact the murder trial and consider the reasons behind the surprising outcome. (stages 4&5 History)
