Since the beginning of the last century a new dimension has been added to
the world of art. Artists such as Braque and Picasso were among the first to use
materials such as newspaper print, tickets and glue to construct a new form of
picture. Often, these materials were the major component. Now collage is very commonly used to add form to paintings, sometimes exposed
and sometimes hidden.
The purpose of this workshop is to explore several uses for materials such as
tissue paper, Japanese papers, found objects such as bus tickets, programmes,
and even textiles and fibres.
A series of small works will be made each using a different group of materials.
Tissue paper both plain and hand coloured will be cut and ripped. Torn up old
paintings, photographs and even photocopies can be used as well as materials
such as raffia, string and even twigs.
The purpose of the workshop is to explore and experiment, and in doing so
hopefully add a new dimension to future paintings. For Year 11 and 12
students the workshop will allow students to discover
new techniques for their major works.
