  • Size 100/16 topstitch (preferable) or jeans machine needles
  • Power board, extension cord

  • Rotary cutter, ruler and mat
  • Scissors
  • Pins
  • Thread both ordinary and decorative e.g. metallic
  • Scraps of fabric, threads, knitting yarns, ribbons, etc

We will be dyeing cotton fabric with fibre-reactive dyes. Basic dyeing will be covered but the main emphasis will be on creating weird and wonderful one-off pieces using simple shibori (fold and stitch resist) techniques.

Requirements for each student
  • Old clothes or an apron, an old towel
  • Dust mask (from hardware store)
  • Rubber gloves (long washing up ones, not disposables – you will be delving into the buckets)
  • Packet of large ziplock plastic bags
  • 1 one cup measuring jug
  • 1 two-litre measuring jug
  • Large plastic spoon for stirring
  • 1 plastic bucket
  • Plastic kitty litter tray or similar (e.g. Large ice-cream containers – several if possible)
None of this equipment should be used for food preparation afterwards

  • At least 5 metres of white 100% cotton fabric washed in hot water and detergent (ironing is not necessary)
  • You may also like to bring some printed fabric for over dyeing.
  • Large needle and strong thread
  • Scissors (not your good ones)
  • Note book, biro and pencil

Outcome: All participants will have several pieces of hand-dyed fabrics.

  • Simple quilt top about 1 metre square. ( E.g. 4 block log cabin or rail fence)

  • A few strips of varying widths of 2 fabrics

  • A piece of fabric with a large scale print.

  • 2 metres “background fabric” – one that is already in the “top” (you could also use 1 metre each of two very similar fabrics)

  •  ½ - 1 metre of at least 6 other fabrics – make sure you have a “dark dark”, a light and a “zinger” among them.

  • If you have long strips left over from other projects, bring them but fat quarters won’t work (if it is the only piece of a fabric that you have and you really want to use it, bring it & we’ll work round it). As well as contrast in values (light/dark), have a variety of scale in the prints. This is a good project for any fabrics that you bought because you loved the colour and them found the print was difficult to work with. I suggest you pull out an assortment of fabrics from your stash that make a nice splash of colour from across the room and only buy extra if you need a dark, a light or a “zinger”.

  • Rotary cutter
  • Long ruler
  • Mat (as large as you can)
  • Sewing machine
  • Neutral thread (or to match fabrics)
  • Pins, scissors and usual sewing equipment
  • Pen, paper or notebook, paper scissors & glue stick
  • Extension cord
  • Power board
  • Masking tape

  • Simple quilt top about 1 metre square. ( E.g. 4 block log cabin or rail fence)

  • Bargello, or a 4 block with the pieces cut from strip-pieced fabric. This is the ideal place to use up a UFO – add some borders if it is too small.

  • Batting
  • Backing
  • Safety pins
  • A variety of decorative machine threads – variegated, rayon, whatever you have. Also some ordinary thread and bobbin thread if you use one.
  • Sewing machine with free motion quilting/darning foot
  • 100/16 topstitch (preferable) or jeans needles
  • Any fabric paints, shiva paint sticks, etc that you have (there will be some available for use)
  • Any rubber stamps, stencils, etc that you have (there will be some available for use)
  • Small washable or disposable objects for printing e.g. leaves, lego blocks, stickers from the newsagent (to be used as a resist so don’t need to be fancy but different sized circles for example work well)
  • Small sponge paint roller (not the textured kind)
  • Small sponge paint brush
  • 1-2 plastic plates (preferably white, dinner plate size) for palettes
  • Printing pad made by wrapping about 3 Sunday papers in a garbage bag and taping any excess of the bag to the back to make a smooth surface.
  • Vliesofix and an assortment of fabrics if you wish to add appliqué
  • 1 metre black tulle (optional – it will be used to hold small scraps in place if you wish to add them to the quilt top)
  • Beads, ribbons, fancy knitting yarns etc for embellishment
  • Pins, scissors and usual sewing equipment
  • Pen, paper or notebook, paper scissors & glue stick
  • Extension cord
  • Power board
  • Masking tape
