Jane grew up in the Inverell district and is a descendant of the Anderson family of “Newstead”. This property
was the location of some of Tom Roberts’ most famous paintings, including “Bailed Up” (AGNSW), “Shearing at Newstead – the Golden Fleece” (AGNSW) and “In
a Corner on the Macintyre” (NGA). Jane has been quilt making since 1983. Her work falls into 2 main categories; modern
interpretations of historical needlework styles, incorporating Australian flora
& flora and variations on traditional geometric patterns used in quilting. She
enjoys exploring non-standard grids and other ways of varying the geometric
designs.
“She likes pieces – lots of them – in her quilts. And colours – rich ones – peppered liberally throughout each
piece. She relishes a challenge of working a quilt to a specific size, theme or
request. She has a quiet fascination for the natural world that translates into
subject matter for her pieces. But she quickly describes her work as variations
on traditional quilts.
Jane credits the influence of several quilt makers for her preference and style. First Margaret Miller, and
the "Strips that Sizzle" method because it introduced her to using the design
wall to trial blocks and settings. Her penchant for working with 60degree triangle came from the work of Sarah Nephew and Jan Urquhurt.”

JANE GIBSON - TEXTILE ARTIST I began
sewing as a very small child and after many years of embroidery and
dressmaking, began quilt making in 1983.
I work predominantly by machine and my work falls into two main
categories; modern interpretations of historical needlework styles,
incorporating Australian flora and fauna and variations on the traditional
geometric patterns used in quilting. I enjoy exploring non-standard grids
and other ways of varying the geometry of the designs.
I dye and print much of the fabric I use and mix it with commercially
printed fabrics of all kinds.
