Tom Roberts was very interested in all forms of art,
including music. His friend Duncan Anderson of Newstead was an accomplished
cornet player, performing throughout Europe as well as appearing in concerts
in Inverell.
The music for this concert will reflect their musical tastes,
with actor Rick Hutton reading entertaining excerpts from Roberts’ and
Anderson’s letters.
The concert will feature:

celebrated soprano Peta Blyth
Two local choirs will perform from the work '‘Living
Images of Long Ago” by Paul Paviour, commissioned for the 1996 Tom Roberts
Festival and based on his local paintings.

ANDREW EVANS -
CORNET/TRUMPET |

Andrew Evans studied trumpet at the
University of Tasmania with Arthur Edwards
and Bruce Lamont. In 1983 he was a State
finalist in the ABC Young Performer
Competition and soloist with the TSO.
Andrew joined the West Australian Symphony
Orchestra in 1984. In 1988 he was awarded a
DAAD Scholarship to study German trumpet at
the Hochschule der Künste in Berlin with
Konradin Groth. During this time he was
engaged to play with the Berlin Philharmonic
Orchestra under conductors Herbert von
Karajan and Ricardo Muti.
Since returning to Australia, Andrew pursued
a freelance career as a member of Elision
Ensemble, Ensemble Modern (Germany),
Australis Ensemble (Austria), Graham Ashton
Brass Ensemble, MSO, SSO, and TSO. He has
appeared as soloist in Franco Donatoni's
"Short" for solo trumpet and Bach's 2nd
Brandenburg Concerto.
In 2002 he toured Australia with the Israel
Philharmonic Orchestra. He is in demand as
'lead trumpet' on many soundtracks for the
Disney and Fox studios.
Andrew is currently Chair of the Brass
Studies Unit and Lecturer in Trumpet at the
Sydney Conservatorium of Music

PETA BLYTH - SOPRANO |

After graduating from the University of
Queensland with a First Class Music Honours
Degree, Peta won the Sir Henry Abel Smith
Scholarship for postgraduate studies with
Ruth Packer at the Royal College of Music,
London and the RCM Opera School.
On returning to Australia, Peta worked with
the Australian Opera Company, making her
principal debut in Brian Howard’s
Metamorphosis. Subsequent roles with the
company included Papagena in The Magic
Flute; Barbarina in The Marriage of Figaro;
the Plaintiff in Trial by Jury; First Niece
in Peter Grimes and Sophie in
Werther. Her
numerous understudies with the company,
included the role of Marie in Daughter of
the Regiment played by Dame Joan Sutherland.
She also performed the role of Musetta in
La Boheme in New Zealand; Barbarina with the
Lyric Opera of Queensland and the title role
in Sculthorpe’s Eliza Fraser. Peta has
performed as soloist with a number of State
orchestras; recorded for the ABC and given
numerous recitals throughout the country.She continues an active performing career
and as the soprano of Melba Trio gives many
recitals which specialize in the repertoire
for voice, flute and piano. She is in demand
as an adjudicator, as a teacher of voice and
regularly conducts vocal workshops
throughout the country. She has taught voice
at the University of Queensland, Griffith
and James Cook Universities.
Together with her husband, Peta organizes
the annual
Opera in the Paddock, in which
she also performs. Held on their family
property near Inverell the event has become
a highly significant arts event in the
region. |

DAVID
MILLER - ACCOMPANIST |
|
David miller is
widely recognized as one of Australia’s
leading chamber vocal musicians and vocal
accompanists. The Sydney morning Herald has
described him as “the role model of
Australian accompanists” and in the Queen’s
Birthday 1995 Honours list he was appointed
as a member of the order of Australia for
his service to music.
His distinguished career has included
partnerships with many internationally
renowned singers and instrumentalists. He
has also been involved with a number of
chamber ensembles including The
Huntington Trio, the contemporary music
ensemble Flederman, The Song
Company, The Australia Ensemble,
Ensemble 24 and The Canberra Wind
Soloists and is a founding member of the
innovative, highly acclaimed Grevillea
Ensemble.
His performing schedule has taken him to
the United Kingdom, New Zealand,
Indonesia, Japan, China, Saudia Arabia, New
Caledonia, Korea, Vanuatu and Vietnam, as
well as through most parts of Australia. He
works regularly for the ABC and Musica Viva
and records for Walsingham Classics, Tall
Poppies, Vox Australis, 2 MBS - FM and ABC
Classics.
He is head of Ensemble Studies at the
Sydney Conservatorium of Music.
David has performed many times in
Inverell in concerts with Elizabeth
Campbell, Thomas Edmonds and Peta Blyth and
as accompanist for
Opera in the
Paddock. |

RICK HUTTON - ACTOR |

Rick
Hutton from Bingara is an active member of
that town’s business and cultural sectors.
He is Manager / Director of H.Fay and Sons
Department store, President of the North
West Theatre Company and Publicity Officer
of Bingara and District VISION 20/20.
Rick has had a long standing interest in
music and theatre. He has, produced,
directed, performed and publicized shows
through a 13 year career as a High School
teacher on through his 18 years spent living
and working in Bingara.
He, and wife Susan have three children.
Daughter Lexi is studying voice at The
Sydney Conservatorium, elder son Nick is
completing a Degree in Stage and Screen
Performance, and younger son Ben is in Year
11 and has a passion for the hospitality
industry. |
